Autumn Adventure in the Khentii Mountains – 11 Days of Mountain Biking, Hiking and Horse Riding in Mongolia
· Mongolia Expeditions

Explore Mongolia’s Khentii Mountains with 250 km of biking, hiking, horseback riding, nomadic culture, and wilderness camping.
From September 2 to 12, 2026, Mongolia Expeditions organized an exciting 11-day multi-activity adventure in the beautiful Khentii Mountains of Mongolia for a group of 15 travelers from the United States. This journey combined mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and comfortable wilderness camping, offering a wonderful opportunity to discover Mongolia's natural beauty and traditional nomadic lifestyle.
During the adventure, our guests cycled a total of 250 kilometers over five days, completed a two-day hiking expedition with a successful ascent of Altai-Olgii Mountain at approximately 2,600 meters above sea level, and enjoyed two days of horseback riding to the historic Princess Temple, hidden deep in the forests of the Khentii Mountains.
The tour was much more than an outdoor adventure. It was a journey through colorful autumn forests, peaceful mountain valleys, remote wilderness, and the fascinating traditions of Mongolia's nomadic people.
The Khentii Mountains – Mongolia's Colorful Autumn Wilderness
The Khentii Mountains, located in northeastern Mongolia, are among the country's most beautiful and historically significant mountain regions. The landscape features dense forests, rolling hills, alpine meadows, crystal-clear rivers, and wide valleys. This region marks the transition between the Siberian taiga and the Mongolian forest-steppe, creating a rich natural environment with diverse wildlife and vegetation.
The Khentii Mountains are also closely connected to Mongolian history, particularly the life of Genghis Khan and the early history of the Mongol Empire.
Early September is one of the most beautiful times to explore this region. Summer gradually gives way to autumn, transforming the forests into a spectacular mixture of golden yellow, orange, and reddish-brown colors. Birch leaves turn yellow, larch forests become golden, and the mountain grasslands take on warm autumn shades.
Our journey took place during this seasonal transition, allowing us to enjoy a different landscape almost every day.
However, autumn in the Mongolian mountains also brings cold mornings and evenings. Temperatures occasionally dropped below freezing, and on several mornings, we discovered that the water in our outdoor washbasins had frozen overnight.
Fortunately, our support team prepared warm water every morning, allowing everyone to wash comfortably despite the cold conditions.
Another wonderful part of our mornings was waking up to the smell of freshly brewed hot coffee prepared by our expedition cook. Enjoying a hot cup of coffee while surrounded by colorful forests and crisp mountain air was a simple but luxurious experience.
Five Days of Mountain Biking – 250 Kilometers Through the Khentii Wilderness
Mountain biking was one of the main highlights of our multi-activity adventure. Over five days, our group covered approximately 250 kilometers through mountain valleys, forest trails, dirt tracks, rolling hills, and remote countryside.
One of the most interesting features of mountain biking in the Khentii region is the diversity of its terrain. Some sections follow relatively smooth tracks across open valleys, while others involve challenging climbs, rocky trails, forest paths, and mountain passes.
The changing landscape makes every day different, combining physical challenges with the pleasure of exploring some of Mongolia's less-traveled regions.
Our daily cycling routine was well organized, allowing enough time for riding, sightseeing, photography, and relaxation.
Breakfast was served at 8:00 AM, and we usually started cycling at 9:00 AM. Around 11:00 AM, we stopped at a mountain pass or scenic viewpoint for a short break, enjoying hot tea, coffee, and snacks while admiring the surrounding scenery.
By approximately 1:00 PM, after cycling around 30–35 kilometers, we stopped for lunch. Following a relaxing break, we continued for another 15 kilometers or so before reaching our next campsite in the afternoon.
With an average daily distance of about 50 kilometers, the itinerary provided a good balance between adventure and enjoyment.
Along the way, we passed through golden forests, crossed beautiful mountain valleys, and occasionally encountered herds of horses and other livestock grazing peacefully in the countryside.
Cycling through this remote landscape gave our travelers a special sense of freedom and a deeper connection with Mongolia's natural environment.
Hiking to Altai-Olgii Mountain – Reaching 2,600 Meters
After our mountain biking adventure, the next challenge was a two-day hiking expedition to Altai-Olgii Mountain, rising approximately 2,600 meters above sea level in the Khentii mountain region.
The higher elevations of the Khentii Mountains offer a different landscape from the forested valleys below. As the trails climb higher, dense forests gradually give way to alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and open mountain slopes.
From these elevated areas, hikers can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding mountains, deep valleys, and seemingly endless wilderness.
Hiking in this region requires endurance, determination, and teamwork. Steep ascents, changing weather conditions, and exposed mountain terrain can make the journey challenging, particularly after several days of mountain biking.
Despite these challenges, our group successfully reached the summit of Altai-Olgii Mountain.
Standing at the summit and looking across the vast Khentii wilderness was one of the most rewarding moments of the entire adventure. The feeling of accomplishment, combined with the spectacular mountain scenery, made the climb a memorable experience for everyone.
Two Days on Horseback – Discovering the Historic Princess Temple
Horseback riding is one of the most authentic ways to experience Mongolia.
For centuries, horses have played a central role in Mongolian culture, transportation, herding, and daily life. Even today, horseback riding remains one of the best ways to explore remote mountain regions where roads are limited or nonexistent.
For many of our American guests, riding Mongolian horses was an entirely new experience.
Our two-day horseback journey took us through beautiful forest trails and mountain valleys toward one of the Khentii region's most fascinating historical sites: Gunjiin Sum, also known as the Princess Temple.
The History of the Princess Temple
Hidden among the forests of the Khentii Mountains, Gunjiin Sum is an important historical monument dating back to the early 18th century.
The temple is associated with the marriage of Dondovdorj, the son of the Khalkha Mongolian noble Chakhundorj, and a princess from the Manchu Qing imperial family.
Following the princess's death, a memorial temple and burial complex were established in her honor.
The remaining stone structures, walls, and architectural ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into Mongolia's aristocratic history and its political and cultural connections with the Qing Dynasty.
Today, the Princess Temple is not only a historical attraction but also a peaceful destination surrounded by beautiful forests and mountain scenery.
Reaching this remote site on horseback made the experience even more special. Rather than simply visiting a historical monument, our travelers experienced the journey in a way that reflected Mongolia's traditional means of transportation.
Understanding Mongolian Horses
Mongolian horses are known for their endurance, strength, and ability to travel across difficult terrain. Although smaller than many European horse breeds, they are remarkably resilient and well adapted to Mongolia's harsh climate and rugged landscape.
However, Mongolian horses are generally raised in free-ranging herds and retain strong natural instincts. Riders must therefore remain attentive and carefully follow the instructions of experienced local horse guides.
During our horseback adventure, two participants unfortunately fell from their horses. These incidents reminded us that horseback riding requires constant attention, proper riding techniques, and respect for the animals.
Despite the challenges, the horseback journey was a unique cultural experience and one of the most memorable parts of our tour.
Comfortable Wilderness Camping – Adventure Without Sacrificing Comfort
One of the important features of our multi-activity tours is the combination of wilderness adventure and comfortable camping facilities.
Traveling through remote mountain regions for several days requires proper rest, nutritious meals, and well-organized support services.
Throughout the expedition, the Mongolia Expeditions team prepared comfortable campsites where our guests could relax after long days of cycling, hiking, or horseback riding.
Unlike small traditional trekking tents, our spacious dome-shaped camping tents were tall enough for guests to stand upright inside. They provided plenty of room for personal belongings and comfortable movement.
Instead of sleeping directly on the ground, our travelers enjoyed folding camping beds, making their nights much more comfortable.
Our team also installed three toilet tents and three shower facilities, providing convenient sanitation arrangements for the group of 15 travelers.
These facilities made a significant difference, particularly during the cold autumn mornings and evenings.
Waking up in a comfortable tent, washing with warm water, enjoying freshly prepared coffee, and sitting down to a delicious breakfast surrounded by mountain scenery created a wonderful balance between adventure and comfort.
Our expedition cook prepared a variety of delicious, nutritious, and energy-rich meals every day. Proper nutrition was especially important because our guests were participating in physically demanding activities throughout the tour.
After a long day of mountain biking or hiking, enjoying a freshly cooked meal in the wilderness was always something everyone looked forward to.
This experience demonstrated that exploring remote wilderness does not necessarily mean giving up comfort. With professional organization, experienced staff, and suitable camping equipment, travelers can enjoy both adventure and a relaxing outdoor lifestyle.
Visiting a Nomadic Family – Experiencing Mongolia's Living Traditions
Another meaningful part of our journey was visiting a local Mongolian nomadic family.
Mongolia's nomadic herding traditions have developed over thousands of years, shaped by the country's vast landscapes, seasonal climate, and pastoral way of life.
Many Mongolian families continue to move seasonally with their livestock, maintaining traditions that have been passed down through generations.
During our visit, the family warmly welcomed us into their traditional ger and offered a selection of homemade Mongolian dairy products and traditional foods.
We tasted suutei tsai (Mongolian milk tea), tarag (fermented yogurt), urum (traditional clotted cream), melted butter, and boortsog (fried dough pastries).
These foods are an essential part of Mongolian culinary culture and reflect the importance of livestock and dairy production in nomadic life.
Our guests were particularly interested in learning how these traditional foods are prepared and how nomadic families manage their daily activities.
We also had the opportunity to speak with the family members about their livestock, seasonal migrations, winter preparations, children's education, and the challenges of living in Mongolia's remote countryside.
The conversations provided valuable insight into a lifestyle that is very different from that of most visitors.
Although our visit was relatively short, it helped our travelers better understand the close relationship between Mongolian nomads, their animals, and the natural environment.
For many participants, this cultural exchange was just as meaningful as the physical adventures of cycling, hiking, and horseback riding.
Eleven Days of Adventure, Nature, and Cultural Discovery
Our 11-day Khentii Mountains Multi-Activities Tour brought together several different outdoor experiences in one memorable journey.
Over the course of the expedition, our group completed five days of mountain biking covering 250 kilometers, two days of hiking with a successful mountain summit, and two days of horseback riding to the historic Princess Temple.
We explored colorful autumn forests, peaceful mountain valleys, remote wilderness trails, and fascinating historical sites. We also experienced the hospitality of Mongolian nomadic families and enjoyed comfortable camping in the heart of nature.
Of course, every adventure comes with challenges. Freezing autumn mornings, steep mountain climbs, long cycling distances, and the unpredictable nature of horseback riding all required patience, endurance, and adaptability.
Yet these challenges were also part of what made the journey so rewarding.
Each day brought new landscapes, new experiences, and new memories.
For our American travelers, this tour offered much more than a typical sightseeing holiday. It was an opportunity to actively explore Mongolia, experience its wilderness, connect with local people, and discover the country's remarkable natural and cultural heritage.
We would like to congratulate all 15 participants on successfully completing this adventure and thank them for choosing Mongolia Expeditions to organize their journey.
Special thanks also go to our dedicated guides, drivers, cook, and support staff, whose hard work and professionalism made the expedition safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.
The autumn landscapes of the Khentii Mountains, the 250 kilometers of mountain biking, the successful summit of Altai-Olgii Mountain, the horseback journey to the Princess Temple, and the warm hospitality of Mongolian nomads will remain unforgettable memories of this wonderful adventure.
At Mongolia Expeditions, we believe that the best way to discover Mongolia is not simply to observe its landscapes, but to travel through them, experience their challenges, and connect with the people and traditions that make this country so unique.
