Mongolia Expeditions Guides Conquer the ICE STORM Baikal 2026

2026-02-22

In February 2026, the cycling guides of Mongolia Expeditions successfully participated in the extreme winter marathon Ice Storm Baikal, held on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal. The event, covering approximately 205 km in three stages, challenged athletes to ride across raw ice, pressure ridges, cracks, and powerful winds. The marathon took place from February 13–15, but on the first day, although all 75 athletes were ready at the start line, a fierce Sarma wind reached speeds of up to 35 m/s, forcing organizers to cancel the stage for safety. Known as one of Baikal’s most dangerous winds, it descends through the Sarma River valley onto the lake, creating extreme conditions. Participants were then transported from Sakhyurta to Buguldeika, where the marathon resumed, and over the next two stages, riders completed 125 km from Buguldeika to Listvyanka, battling freezing temperatures, shifting ice conditions, and crosswinds. Surrounded by Baikal’s vast frozen beauty, the Mongolia Expeditions team demonstrated strong endurance and expedition spirit, successfully completing one of the world’s toughest winter marathons.
